FIRE IN WORKPLACES

FIRE IS A REAL THREAT TO BUSINESS: The latest government statistics indicate that in the year ending 2008 there were 29,000 fires in work places in the UK. This equates to 79 fires a day in commercial and non dwelling workplaces. However, these statistics masque a hidden layer of unreported fires. Surveys carried out by the fire industry in 2002 indicated that the majority of work place fires were successfully dealt with by company staff using site fire extinguishers WITHOUT Fire Service intervention. Subsequently, these incidents have never found their way into official government statistics and are estimated to have saved UK businesses over half a billion pounds. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) places specific responsibilities on employers, owners and occupiers to provide suitable and sufficient fire training for all staff. The insurance industry recently reported an increase in the size of financial fire losses and claims; in the current economic climate insurers will be looking for more proactive and compliant management in assessing claims.
